The Northern Elders Political Development group has commended Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for their joint efforts toward enhancing security in the nation's Northwest area.
The group’s Secretary, Dr. Adamu Giwa, stated in Kaduna on Tuesday that most towns and villages in the area celebrated Eid-el-Fitri calmly with no reported incidents of bandit attacks. However, some disturbances were seen in certain communities within Sokoto and Zamfara states.
"We are glad to observe that most towns and villages in the North West region celebrated Eid-al-Fitr calmly with no reported incidents of bandit attacks," he stated.
According to PUNCH online, the recognition follows the successful implementation of Fansa Yamma, resulting in the dismantling of bandits' strongholds in certain regions of the Northwest.
Adamu stated that the collective felt the enhanced safety measures have considerably lessened the difficulties associated with travel and trade, particularly on key corridors such as the route from Sokoto through Gusau to Kano.

Moreover, the team commended Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for his role in orchestrating the efforts of the military to maintain peace and calmness in the Northern region.
"We also recognize the steadfast support from the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who has been overseeing the armed forces to maintain peace and calm in the north," Giwa stated additionally.
The group also praised President Bola Tinubu’s support and goodwill to the troops, which has yielded positive results in reducing kidnapping and attacks by bandits in Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto states.
He said, “We applaud President Tinubu’s support and goodwill to the troops, which has boosted their morale and enabled them to achieve success in their operations against banditry. However, concerns have been raised over reports of pockets of attacks in some villages of Sabon Birni and Isa, Sokoto state, as well as in other areas of Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara states.
We are cognizant of the sporadic incidents occurring in certain villages, yet we trust that the military along with other security organizations is exerting maximum effort to tackle this issue.
They commended the military’s sacrifice and efforts in ensuring the protection of people, which has brought success in their operations against banditry activities.
