Trump Administration Seeks Enhanced Cooperation With Vietnam

U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper stated that Vietnam plays a crucial role in the international supply chain, and under President Donald Trump’s administration, efforts will be made to enhance cooperative ties between the two nations.

General Secretary To Lam greatly appreciated the advancements in bilateral relations across various sectors during a meeting with the ambassador in Hanoi on Monday, particularly highlighting the consistent development of economic, trade, and investment connections.

Lam stressed the importance of effectively implementing the joint statement along with the action plan aimed at advancing the comprehensive strategic partnership. This was intended to serve mutual interests between both countries as well as promote peace, collaboration, and sustainable growth within the region and globally.

Lam spoke highly of efforts made by Knapper and the staff of the U.S. Embassy in promoting and effectively implementing high-level agreements and cooperation initiatives under the Vietnam-U.S. comprehensive strategic partnership, which focus on strengthening high-level engagements, building and consolidating political trust, and expanding all-around cooperation, including business, culture, and education.

The Party chief stated that Vietnam's relevant ministries, sectors and agencies are actively addressing the U.S.'s current concerns. He emphasized Vietnam's commitment to encouraging the import of US products that Vietnam needs, particularly farm produce, liquefied natural gas, and high-tech products.

The Vietnamese government consistently focuses on fostering an attractive investment climate and supports foreign businesses, particularly those from the United States, in broadening their collaboration and investments within the country. This approach aims at sustaining a balanced economic partnership marked by steady development and delivering clear advantages to both nations' citizens, as stated by Lam.

Knapper stated that the enthusiasm and backing from Vietnamese Party and State officials, coupled with the cooperation among various ministries and sectors in Vietnam, has greatly encouraged the development of US-Vietnam ties in recent times and will continue to do so for many years ahead.

The United States cherishes the all-encompassing strategic partnership with Vietnam and wishes for both nations to keep enhancing and deepening their collaboration to provide concrete advantages to their citizens, as he mentioned.

The diplomat stated that the United States greatly appreciates Vietnam’s foreign policy of independence and self-sufficiency and remains committed to supporting Vietnam in maintaining its increasing significance in fostering peace and collaboration within the region and globally. The diplomat characterized a “powerful, autonomous, thriving, and robust” Vietnam as a beneficial force for tranquility and stability both regionally and internationally, emphasizing that such support from the U.S. has been consistent.

Knapper expressed significant gratitude towards the Vietnamese leadership for their adept handling of American concerns. Additionally, he commended Vietnam's pragmatic steps toward fostering a balanced and enduring trading partnership with the United States.

He stated that American companies and allies consider economic, trade, and investment collaboration with Vietnam to be highly significant, viewing the Southeast Asian nation as a crucial partner within the worldwide supply chain. Additionally, he pointed out that the Vietnamese market offers numerous opportunities for U.S.-made goods and services.

He committed to working towards encouraging relevant U.S. agencies to collaborate with Vietnam to robustly implement the comprehensive strategic partnership across all dimensions. He particularly emphasized boosting high-level meetings, broadening practical collaboration in economic, trade, and investment fields, strengthening defense and security ties, enhancing educational exchanges, addressing immigration matters, tackling transnational crime prevention and combat, as well as advancing other key sectors.
