800 Disabled Individuals Gain Valuable ICT Skills

Since 2023, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has improved the lives of more than 800 people with disabilities nationwide by providing them with crucial Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills.

The accomplishment was recognized during a graduation ceremony held in Kariba, attended by 35 recently empowered individuals celebrating their achievements.

The deputy director of Postal and Courier Services at POTRAZ's Universal Services Fund (USF), Mr Tichafa Mujuru, stated that this training acts as a symbol of opportunities for young people and women who have disabilities. It also highlights the government’s dedication to promoting inclusiveness.

One of the graduates was Bethel Musaba, a fisherman and father of three from Chief Mola living with albinism. He expressed his deep gratitude for the program.

"Over this five-day program, my comprehension of technology was completely revamped. Today, I am able to leverage my smartphone for promoting my fishing and farming goods, connecting with a much larger clientele base than previously imagined," he stated.

Siahundu, who moves about using crutches, voiced comparable opinions.

"In our neighborhood, where technology appears unattainable, we rarely had the chance to engage with computers and smartphones at school. I am thankful for this opportunity provided by the government," she stated.

Bethel and Brightness both declared their desire to disseminate their newly acquired wisdom within their respective communities, aiming to drive economic and social transformation.

POTRAZ has partnered 13 organisations dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities, making this initiative a collaborative effort that speaks volumes about the importance of inclusivity.

Mr. Job Mazhinji, who serves as the chairperson of the National Council of Disabled Persons of Zimbabwe (NCDPZ) in Kariba, stated that this program truly exemplifies the government's dedication to building an inclusive society.

He stated, 'This goes beyond mere accomplishment; it’s proof of our ability to bounce back from obstacles. We deeply appreciate POTRAZ’s consistent commitment to ensuring digital access.'

The generous initiative has given participants access to free training that paves the way for new opportunities.

Joining forces with the Internet Society Zimbabwe Chapter, POTRAZ is ensuring that these vulnerable members of society gain the necessary skills to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Engineer Taurai Nyamufuka, president of the chapter, reiterated the importance of basic ICT skills.

"In today's fast-paced digital landscape, everyone should be equipped to navigate life effectively."

Reflecting on the programme's success, Engineer Mujuru highlighted its role in furthering the Second Republic's Vision 2030 agenda.

We take pride in commemorating the advancements we have achieved in offering ICT skills to individuals with disabilities, thereby enhancing their economic and social standing.

In line with its commitment to corporate social responsibility, POTRAZ keeps aiding disadvantaged groups by fostering sustainable growth via multiple programs, such as supplying vital supplies, health services, and facilities.
