Mumbai (Maharashtra), India, March 31 (ANI): Over the past four to five years, Bollywood has seen several highly anticipated releases featuring big-name stars from the Hindi film industry turn out to be disappointments at the box office.
Although numerous people blame the rise of OTT platforms for this decline, film industry analyst Komal Nahta argues that the lack of effort from screenplay writers is solely responsible for the downturn in Bollywood.
When talking to ANI, film critic Nahta attributed the decline of compelling narratives in Bollywood to the absence of enthusiasm among screenplay authors. According to him, contemporary writers do not bother revising or refining their scripts, assuming that their initial drafts will be approved without changes.
When questioned regarding the cause of the string of failures in Bollywood, film critic Nahta stated,
Laziness alone was the culprit. The person who finishes the script believes it’s correct that they completed it. However, this isn’t true. It involves a whole team.
It needs to go through many stages. You must rewrite it multiple times.
Nahta pointed out the dedication to storytelling among accomplished directors like Rajkumar Hirani, who exemplify this through their ability to create compelling narratives as both writers and filmmakers.
"Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, their writing team, they said that how many times we have written 80% of the script and say that it is not working, let's cancel it."
He goes on, “This is screenwriting, and this is fervent filmmaking. Should you believe that your work is correct, remember that the audience might not automatically embrace what you’ve penned down or the movie you’ve created—they may enjoy it instead. It’s crucial to remain true to yourself.”
Recently, the Salman Khan starrer Sikandar It became available online, with film industry analyst Komal Nahta being one of the initial individuals to spot it on an internet site.
When speaking with ANI on Sunday, Nahto stated, “Yesterday evening, during my trading activities, I found out that the movie had already been released online. However, I did not immediately share this information via Twitter as I needed absolute confirmation. Occasionally, just a handful of clips get leaked without revealing everything; labeling something as fully exposed could lead to undue alarm,” explained Nahto to ANI.
"This morning, I spoke to seven or eight people in the trade, and they confirmed that the film had been leaked. I was also told that Sajid Nadiadwala and the authorized team worked hard to remove the film from many piracy websites. But by then, the damage was already done. It spreads very fast," the analyst said
Nahta also added how piracy can severely affect a film's Box Office performance, especially when it happens just around the time of its release.
"Kya hota hai na kabhi kabhi ek hafte baad, do hafte baad film pirated hoti hai aur piracy wali copy aapke paas aa jaati hai. Ye toh release se pehle aur release ke din toh definitely...." Nahta said.
"Free mein agar aapke phone mein Salman Khan ki film jo release ho rahi hai, usi din aapke mobile mein free mein aa gayi hai, toh kyun aap cinema hall jaayenge?" he added.
ANI reached out to producer Sajid Nadiadwala's team for a response. While they did not confirm the leak, the team shared that their piracy agencies are actively working to handle the issue.
' Sikandar ', directed by AR Murugadoss and starring Rashmika Mandanna, was released on March 30. (ANI)
