Germany Warns of EU Turmoil: New Government Seeks to Punish Putin's Ally

The new German government wants to push the European Union to impose sanctions on a member state for failing to uphold the bloc’s fundamental values.

Although the specific nation was not directly identified in the preliminary proposal put forth by Germany’s newly formed government leadership, Politico Reports indicate that Berlin is focusing on Hungary—one of Vladimir Putin 'closest partners in Europe.'

The alliance, which comprises the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Christian Social Union (CSU), and likely the Social Democratic Party The SPD is calling for the EU to implement stronger measures against nations that breach its regulations.

Negotiators from the parties reportedly wrote: The current protective measures, including infringement procedures, the freezing of European Union finances, and the suspension of member privileges like voting rights within the Council of the EU, should be implemented far more rigorously than they have been in the past.

Hungary, under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán —an ardent backer of the Russian president—has faced accusations of weakening judicial independence, curtailing press freedoms, and dismantling democratic standards.

Ever since the start of the conflict in Ukraine back in February 2022, Budapest has repeatedly advocated for reducing the economic penalties that the European Union has enforced on Russia over this extended period.
