Corneille Nangaa, the leader of the Alliance fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) rebellion, has urged the entirety of the DR Congo diaspora to support efforts aimed at freeing their homeland. Recently, the rebels permitted the departure of South Africa–led Southern African Development Community (SADC) troops along with their weaponry and gear from eastern DR Congo. These southern African forces previously surrendered following the capture of Goma, North Kivu Province's main city, in January.
Nangaa leads a movement seeking good governance centered around protecting essential human rights, ensuring safety for all Congolese individuals, and addressing underlying conflicts within the nation. His alliance aims to eliminate issues like tribal favoritism, cronyism, graft, and ideologies promoted by groups such as the FDLR—DR Congo-supported militants accused of perpetrating acts akin to genocide.
FDLR emerged post-Rwandan Genocide perpetrated primarily against Tutsis; these insurgents pose significant threats across both Rwanda and neighboring regions. Under Nangaa's leadership—a role he assumed after serving as chairperson of the National Electoral Commission—the fight centers on establishing equitable stateship where societal harmony prevails alongside individual dignity throughout DR Congo.
In his address conveyed through social media recently, Nangaa emphasized inclusivity stating "Our revolution does not cater exclusively to certain circles," asserting openness towards those capable irrespective of background contributions toward overcoming contemporary global challenges collectively facing DR Congo today.
Furthermore, recent developments indicate ongoing struggles involving substantial territorial gains made by AFC/M23 amidst intense confrontations initiated largely because of repeated breaches observed concerning initial ceasefires agreed upon initially. Key milestones include seizing control over vital locations such as Goma, Kavumu Airport, Bukavu Capital City, culminating eventually reaching Walikale situated approximately 130 km westward from Goma itself.
Historically speaking, tensions escalated significantly when elements linked originally under another faction named CNDP decided once more take arms leading ultimately forming present-day configuration known now broadly referred AFC/M23. Initial attempts at reconciliation occurred back in early 2009 wherein promises were made regarding integrating combatants into mainstream governmental structures followed shortly thereafter transforming organization officially transitioning status quo dynamics entirely reversing progress achieved thus far.
Presently aligned strategically amongst broader alliances bolstered substantially via external backing particularly from nations including Belgium coupled closely working together alongside factions identified directly implicated historically involved previous atrocities witnessed specifically targeting minority populations predominantly located Eastwards parts DR Congo currently experiencing heightened levels unrest presently.
