Royal Navy Helicopter Deal Secures 200 Jobs

According to an official statement from the government, a fresh Royal Navy deal will maintain around 200 positions in Somerset.

Over 50 Royal Navy helicopters will undergo servicing as part of a £165 million contract renewal with Leonardo Helicopters, safeguarding approximately 1,000 British employment positions.

Leonardo, which has operations in Yeovil, serves as the main contractor, while Lockheed Martin and Serco have been designated as crucial subcontractors.

The Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle, stated: "This investment showcases our steadfast dedication to sustaining advanced defense capacities that ensure our safety, all while using defense as a catalyst for economic development."

The Merlin Mk2 helicopters are mainly employed for hunting submarines; however, they can also be tasked with conducting search and rescue missions, stopping drug trafficking, and aiding in humanitarian assistance initiatives.

In addition to roles located in Somerset, this pact will also uphold positions at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall.

Nigel Colman, managing director at Leonardo Helicopters UK, said: "We're extremely proud to have provided the UK's AW101 Merlin fleet from the home of British helicopters in Yeovil.

"Working closely with the Ministry of Defence and Royal Navy, we're keeping the Merlin fleet supported and available, so it's ready to fly whenever and wherever it's called upon."
