SGR Passenger Numbers vs. Revenue: An International Perspective

Last year saw a decrease in the number of people traveling via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which was the first decline after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this downturn, higher ticket prices managed to keep revenue growing.

According to data provided by the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC), 2.44 million passengers utilized their train services in 2024, marking a 10 percent decline compared to the 2.72 million recorded in 2023. This drop can be attributed to travelers' responses to an increase in ticket prices by up to KSh1,500 implemented at the beginning of this year.

Nevertheless, the fare increase resulted in a 39% rise in revenue, which climbed to Sh4.09 billion in 2024, compared to Sh2.93 billion in 2023.
