Storms Ravage Mykonos and Paros: Flooding and Destruction in Greece

A strong storm battered the Greek islands of Paros and Mykonos on Monday, causing extensive floods which led to school closures and an order restricting all non-emergency vehicle movement.

Heavy rainfall in Paros' main towns of Parikia and Naousa – both popular vacation spots – caused floodwaters that surged through streets, carrying cars and debris past whitewashed buildings.

Officials from Paros mentioned that 13 individuals who were trapped during the storm were transported to their residences by firefighters. They also stated that there have been no reports of injuries or missing persons.

In Mykonos, where the inundation was relatively mild, excavators were employed to create channels for the floodwaters, which then surged past the seaside cafés and eateries.

Authorities instructed schools on Paros, Mykonos, and two additional Aegean Sea islands to keep their doors shut on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the civil protection agency dispatched mobile phone warnings urging inhabitants to remain inside.

City workers along with private companies were busy clearing roadways obstructed by boulders, whereas rescue teams saved drivers trapped in their vehicles.

Various islands close to Paros within the Cyclades archipelago, located southeast of the Greek mainland in the Aegean Sea, continue to face extreme weather alerts until Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has released revised predictions for extensive rainfall and thunderstorms, which are anticipated to persist through early Wednesday, impacting areas including the Ionian Islands, various parts of the mainland, Macedonia, Thrace, the Aegean Sea, and Attica.

People living in the impacted regions were advised to stay alert and adhere to the official safety instructions due to the approaching storm.
