Clashes Erupt Between Somali Forces and Al-Shabaab in Sabiid Area – International Edition (English)

Clashes between Somali government troops and Al-Shabaab fighters have intensified in the Sabiid district, which is close to Afgooye town within the Lower Shabelle region, starting from yesterday.

People in the region are living in dread, with many evacuating to Afgooye to avoid getting caught up in an impending battle, as tensions rise towards a confrontation between opposing forces in Sabiid, now controlled by Al-Shabaab. This militant group seized the territory just last week.

Intense battles have occurred multiple times in this area, leading to the withdrawal of Somali government troops who were overwhelmed by relentless assaults from Al-Shabaab militants.

Moreover, Awdheegle, a nearby town to Sabiid, has seen substantial population displacements because of rising tensions. This situation arose after the Somali government forces tried to reclaim the region, which continues to be controlled by Al-Shabaab.

Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, Al-Shabaab has escalated its activities in the Lower Shabelle and Middle Shabelle zones, reclaiming multiple territories with considerable success. This resurgence has considerably undermined the influence of the Somali government within these districts.
