Mumbai (Maharashtra), India, March 30 (ANI): The seasoned actor Raza Murad , renowned for his outstanding performances in Bollywood, has opened up about collaborating with one of the most respected directors in the film world. Sanjay Leela Bhansali .
During an open conversation with ANI, Murad discussed Bhansali's distinctive approach to filmmaking, highlighting his meticulous attitude and explaining how actors must deliver their finest performances to match the director's stringent expectations.
Murad remembered when Bhansali, who looks up to the renowned director Raj Kapoor, initially reached out to him regarding 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela' back in 2013.
" Sanjay Leela Bhansali "I'm a huge admirer of Raj Kapoor. Interestingly, he is my junior at the institute, yet he is considerably younger than I am," Murad mentioned.
The actor fondly remembered their first meeting for the film, where they spent most of their time discussing the classic 'Prem Rog' and Raj Kapoor's approach to filmmaking.
It was clear from their discussions that Bhansali held Raj Kapoor in high regard. Murad mentioned, “He had great fascination towards both Raj Kapoor and the film 'Prem Rog.’” Furthermore, Murad noted, "'Ram Teri Ganga Maili' is his most beloved movie. According to him, whenever this film airs, he sets aside all else just to watch until the conclusion because it deeply resonates with him.”
Murad also addressed Bhansali's penchant for perfectionism and the stringent benchmarks he establishes during production.
"He is a workaholic and a perfectionist. He is a very hard taskmaster. As an actor, if you satisfy him, you can work with any director in the world," Murad said.
"On set, he has an eye for every detail--from the clothes to the makeup, to the colors of the background. He is a visualizer. He wants exactly what he envisions, and there is no compromise in that," Murad added during a conversation with ANI.
Referring to Bhansali as a "genius," Murad emphasized how the director’s meticulous focus on each small detail of film production enhances the striking visual allure of his movies.
"I'd describe him as a genius. His large team makes certain that even the tiniest flaws don’t slip through," Murad said additionally.
He also recalled the meticulous care Bhansali took in selecting the right look for his character in ' Padmaavat '--even the smallest detail, such as the style of his beard, was scrutinised, with Bhansali personally approving the final choice.
On his continued collaboration with Bhansali, Murad revealed that he is working with the director again for an upcoming project, marking their fifth collaboration.
Indeed, an invite has arrived for a new project. It seems I’m the sole actor he’s worked with five times now," Murad mentioned, gratified by the director's faith in him, further stating, "He refers to me as his good luck charm.
Raza Murad has worked with Bhansali in his iconic films, including 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela' (2013), where he played the role of the sarpanch; 'Bajirao Mastani' (2015), where he portrayed the Nizam of Hyderabad; ' Padmaavat ' (2017), in which he played Jalaluddin Khilji; and 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' (2022), where he had a smaller role.
